Doreen was an incredible character. In the early stages of establishing Wicca as a religion, Doreen Valiente worked very closely with Gerald Gardner to create this tradition. She noted that large quantities of Gerald Gardner’s book of shadows were quite clearly taken from Aleister Crowley, particularly his Gnostic Mass. She stripped this out and replaced it with pagan poetry. Interestingly she was once told how the “charge of the goddess” had great ancient roots which she found it very amusing because she wrote it in the mid 1950s.
