A tema is a metal plate which is embossed and left as an offering, particularly in the placating of Greek Orthodox saints. It is not unusual for the plate to be embossed with an image of the saint to whom it is offered or symbol representing the things desired (i.e embossed with an image of coins for wealth, a pair of marriage crowns for a happy marriage or body parts for the healing of those parts of the body.
